IGUALA (Mexico)

City in Guerrero state, 50 mi SSW of Cuernavaca. The Plan of Iguala was proclaimed here by Agustín de Iturbide on February 24, 1821. It guaranteed racial equality, absolute independence from Spain, and Roman Catholicism as Mexico’s only religion; but it was abandoned when Iturbide became emperor.
