IKARIA [Kariot, Nicaria, Nikaria] [ancient: Icaria] (Greece)

Island of the Sporades, in the Aegean Sea, 13 mi WSW of Samos. According to Greek mythology, Daedalus, an inventor, built wings of wax and feathers for himself and his son, Icarus, in order to flee from King Minos of Crete. Icarus flew too near the sun, which melted the wax. He fell into the sea near this island.
