IMOLA [ancient: Forum Cornelii] (Italy)

City in Bologna province, Emilia-Romagna region, 21 mi SE of Bologna. Originally a Roman town founded by Sulla in 82 b.c., it became a free commune in the 11th century and passed to the papacy in

the 16th century. The town is one of the many Roman colonies founded on the Via Emilia, which runs directly through its center. See Papal States.
