INCHON [former: Chemulpo; Japanese: Jinsen] (South Korea)

City and port on the Yellow Sea, 25 mi WSW of Seoul. Originally a small fishing village, it was opened as a treaty port in 1883 and was expanded during the Japanese occupation, from 1904 to 1945. In September 1950, during the Korean War, U.S. forces landed here prior to a United Nations offensive northward.
